Getting Around Lyon, With the Card

Metro, trams, buses and the two Fourvière funiculars — how Lyon's TCL network actually works for a visitor, the validation rule that voids tickets, and when walking wins.

Updated August 2026

Lyon is France’s easiest big city to move through — four metro lines, modern trams, and two funiculars doing the one climb your legs would resent — and the City Card turns the whole network into a flat, already-paid fact. Here’s the visitor’s working knowledge.

The network, visitor-sized

The metro’s four lines cross at Bellecour and Part-Dieu; line D (driverless) runs to Vieux Lyon station, the old town’s door. From there the two funiculars climb: one to Fourvière for the basilica and the view, one to St-Just past the Roman theatres. Trams serve the Confluences run down the peninsula; buses fill the gaps a visitor rarely needs. Frequencies are metro-normal — you don’t plan around timetables, you just descend.

The rule that voids tickets

The office prints it and we bold it: validate at first use and at EVERY connection. Change from metro to funicular? Validate again. It’s a thirty-second habit that keeps the card’s transport side legitimate — and inspectors do check the funiculars in season. One more dark date for the calendar: no TCL service on May 1.

When walking wins anyway

The Presqu’île — Bellecour to Terreaux — is a stroll, and Vieux Lyon’s traboule country is walking-only by nature. The honest pattern: ride the spine, walk the flesh — funicular up Fourvière (never walk that hill with luggage-tired legs), metro between districts, feet inside them. Visitors who skip the card for walkability reasons usually forget the funicular is TCL too — and that’s the ride nobody skips. Whether the whole card earns its place: the worth-it math; what it opens beyond transport: the inclusions.
