Is the Lyon City Card Worth It?

Most city-card math runs on one meter: museum entries against the card price. Lyon’s runs on two, because the card bundles unlimited TCL transport. Every metro hop, every tram, and both Fourvière funiculars count against the price alongside the museum doors.

The two meters

Transport first. A visitor moving normally through Lyon burns a fistful of single tickets a day, and the funicular up to Fourvière is the ride everyone takes twice. Then the museums: 26 of them on the card, led by the Confluences ($16 at its own gate), the Beaux-Arts on Terreaux, and Gadagne’s Lyon-history museums in Vieux Lyon.

Now the price: the 24-hour card sells at €29.90 on the tourist office’s shop. Two museums and one normal day of riding beat that on their own. The longer tiers only widen the margin.

Who should buy it

First-timers doing Lyon properly: Fourvière, Vieux Lyon, a museum flagship. Rainy-season visitors, since the museums are the city’s wet-day spine. And anyone staying outside the centre, for whom the transport meter runs hardest.

Who shouldn’t

If Lyon is a food trip with walks between meals, skip it. The bouchons and tastings book separately anyway, and a walker who enters one museum should just buy that ticket. Don’t buy for May 1 either; TCL doesn’t run that day and most museums close. And the traboules, the famous hidden passages, are free to wander. The 5.0-rated guided version books apart, and no card enters that decision.
